Ultrasonic flow meters measure the difference between the transit time of ultrasonic pulses propagating with and against the flow direction. This time difference is a measure of the average velocity of the fluid along the path of the ultrasonic beam. 

Using these two transit times, , and other physical parameters to calculate the acoustic path length such as pipe diameter, wall thickness, or fluid, it is possible to infer the fluid velocity. Then certain assumptions are made about the internal pipe roughness and a flow K factor is applied in order to account for the Reynolds number (the shape of the velocity profile). From these variables a flow rate is calculated. This is a velocity value and then the volume flow is calculated by multiplying by the pipe cross sectional area.  

The transit time method is now a very accepted technology, used since 1955.
